START FROM THE RIGHT PLACE

Whether you are carrying out your own SEO programme or hiring an external specialist, it is essential that you start measuring performance right at the beginning.
A good set of metrics from day one will give you a valuable starting point from which to measure performance for the months and years ahead.
Reporting and analysis: a vital tool in monitoring your SEO performance
If you are to truly run a successful long-term search engine optimisation programme, it is essential that you carry out or source regular reporting and analysis.
What should you measure?
Our knowledge centre articles on seo keyword research and competitor analysis spell out much of the analysis that is needed at the start of a search engine optimisation programme.
Once these are in place, there are a number of steps that should ideally be performed regularly to maintain good search engine performance in the highly competitive world of the internet, including:
Ranking progress. You should certainly schedule regular use of the main search engines to monitor how well you are doing on each of your keywords and phrases. You can either do this manually or, if time is an issue, ask an SEO specialist to use their resources and automated search ranking software.
Linking performance. Carefully monitoring your link-building activity is important because of the significant impact this can have on search ranking results. A continuing examination of which sites should ideally link to your site and how successful you are in achieving those links should almost certainly be a necessary part of your reporting and analysis schedule.
Visitor traffic. Of course, achieving excellent ranking results is only beneficial if sufficient numbers of people click those links to reach your site. If you have a good 'web logs' system you should be able to track visitor numbers and where those visitors come from. If your current logging system doesn't give you accurate, detailed information it would be wise to address this so that you can properly analyse visitor traffic.
Competitor activity. By regularly checking which keywords and phrases you competitors are optimising for, and how well they are performing, you can make sound decisions about whether and how to react.
