The Quality of Your Links: Factors Search Engines Take Into Account - Context

Context is important in everything. It is important when we humans communicate so as to not confuse the real meaning behind words and actions. As often happens, when things are taken out of context there is misunderstanding. In SEO context is just as important.

Search engines look not only at the linking site’s popularity but also on what the pages contain. To put things into context there are three specific things that search engines take into account - the subject matter of the page wherein the link is found, the text adjacent to the link, and the anchor text used for that link.

Subject Matter
- The importance of the subject matter is plain common sense. The more relevant the contents of the web page containing the link is to the theme of your website or webpage it links to, the higher the value of that link. If you read the previous post on site popularity you will realize that this is related to the niche community popularity. After all what these two factors both are pointing to is simply the relevance of the link to your website’s content.

Text Adjacent to Link - In the same note, the text directly adjacent to the link affects the link quality since it also is a determinant of the link’s relevance. This means that being listed in the sidebar is good but being actually mentioned and linked to in an article or blog post in which the topic is very much what your website is all about is a whole lot better. The link list in the sidebar after all contains only links as well, of which the links’ titles may or may not even be that related to your website. Being linked to in the main content is also beneficial not only in SEO terms since it will surely automatically generate traffic for your site since people usually pay more attention to the main content than the sidebar.
