New Domains and SEO
Dec 52007
If you have already have a website in existence it might not seem to make sense to get a new domain name for that site, after all we know that the age of your domain reflects on your SEO. What many don’t realise though is that getting a new domain name can actually be beneficial in terms of SEO if…
- you purchase an old domain name - Since age is a big factor in SEO you can buy an old domain name and simply redirect the domain to your existing website. This means you get instant ageing points for your current site. Note though that before purchasing a domain name you’d better make sure that the domain isn’t being sold due to an unsavoury reputation (i.e. banned on search engines) because if it is then it would do more harm than good to your SEO efforts.
- your domain already has a bad search engine history - In case you have been guilty (or is a victim of) bad SEO practices and this has affected your domain’s reputation then getting a new domain name and transferring your site is the way to go. In getting a new domain name though make sure that you choose good keywords to go in the domain name and hire an SEO firm that practices legitimate SEO this time to make sure you won’t have to abandon a domain name again.
- you already have old domains that you don’t really use - This occurs in more businesses than you realise. Companies start out with different domains for their websites and forget about some of the domains. If you have old domain names there that are currently unused make use of these domains and redirect these old “new” domains to the currently active website. If you have a problem with number two you might simply consider using an unused old domain instead of purchasing a new one.
