published by Dan in Keyword Research | SEO Tools with No comments

I don’t need to stress the importance of keyword research when it comes to SEO. Below are some tools that you can use to aid in your keyword research. Many SEO consultants use several keyword research tools since each tool has its different strengths and weaknesses.

  • Google AdWords Keyword Tool - This will not give you in-depth results but is sufficient for looking up keywords and phrases related to your primary keyword. You can sort the results depending on the volume of actual times the suggested keywords are searched by people on Google.
  • Google Trends - Helpful for analysing the trend of your keywords and phrases. By staying on top of which keywords and phrases are becoming more popular you can adjust your SEO campagin accordingly.
  • adCenter Labs Keyword Forecast - This offers features similar to Google Trends and contains various keyword analysis tools.
  • Wordtracker Free Keyword Suggestion Tool - Gives 100 related keywords and phrases to the keyword you entered. The results of Wordtracker comes from daily data provided by Dogpile and Metacrawler. The list of words is also ranked using an equation relating the frequency of search for each keyword and the actual number of sites competing for that keyword.
  • Trellian Free Search Term Suggestion Tool - Pretty much works the same way as Wordtracker but differs in that the data used to rank the words comes from yearly data. Wordtracker uses DAILY data from Dogpile and Metacrawler.
  • Yahoo Keyword Selector Tool (Overture) - Offers keyword suggestions based on actual searches done on the Yahoo search engine.
  • SEO Book Keyword Suggestion Tool - Uses the Yahoo Keyword Selector Tool but offers other useful information aside from the keywords listed.

Harmony in Keyword Use

Jul 182007

published by Dan in Keyword Research with No comments

Using the right keywords is a very important component of any successful SEO campaign. However, it is not just the use of the right keywords but HOW you use the keywords that makes an even bigger impact. You might have done your keyword research and come up with a pretty good set of terms but if you don’t put them into proper use then those keywords wouldn’t be as effective.

To optimize the use of keywords you should make sure that the keywords are used in concert. This means that you should have a clear idea of what each page in your website is about and how to use keywords in each page so as to reflect the overall theme of your site. You would want to use keywords that are inter-related to be able to build a more solid theme.

If your website covers a pretty broad topic(s) then you can at least make sure that each portion/section of the website uses keywords that will enforce the specific theme of each section. Aside from this you should of course also use the most important keywords of each section in the main page so as to link the individual sections to the main page giving the search engines (and your visitors) a good overall look of the website’s entire scope.

In my next post I will go over the different components in your website where you should make sure the proper keywords appear.

Great Product and Poor Keywords makes for Bad Marketing

Jul 42007

published by Dan in Keyword Research with No comments

Before I continue with the series of online video optimisation posts I would like to re-tell something that happened a few hours ago reminding me about the importance of keyword research.

A few hours ago, right before writing today’s post my partner and I were discussing future plans. I remembered this great prefab houses I stumbled on the internet about a month back. The problem was I couldn’t remember exactly what it was called. Now I know it sounds dumb but ask anyone who loves to surf the net and you will find that this is a very common problem. People tend to remember website names pretty vaguely, unless your website has a very sticky name that you just can’t help but remember, let alone the website’s URL. This is actually the very reason why search engines is the number one gateway for finding information. People don’t want to have to remember exact phrases or words. It is more convenient to find websites by typing in words or phrases that you know are related to what you are looking for. This is why your website’s keywords are very important.

Now the prefab houses I remembered was (as I now know) called FlatPak. It is actually getting really popular nowadays but I just couldn’t remember it. My point about keywords is that I spent more than an hour searching for it trying various search strings before I found it. The search strings I tried were:

  • Packed It House
  • Packed House
  • Packedhouse
  • Prefab Houses
  • Prefabricated Houses
  • Modular House
  • Unique House

In none of these did the FlatPak website rank well. Sure I could just have entered Pack House, which it ranks very well for but the point is that I remembered wrong and ended up finding it through difficult research by the time which my partner has already lost interest and fallen asleep. Lesson learned you may sell great houses but if you have a poor range of keywords in which you place well you will lose customers.

Finding the Balance When Using Keywords

May 122007

published by Dan in Keyword Research with No comments

Keywords are a very important aspect of SEO. It is the keywords that will determine how searchable your content and thus, your website, will be.

Users of search engines ALWAYS find the information they need by typing in some keywords and key phrases into the search box and simply choosing from the results given to them. Now if you do not choose the proper keywords and phrases your website will definitely not be found among the results even if your website does have the information the user needs. Because of this some people make sure their website contains all the possible keywords and phrases the user is likely to enter and resort to keyword stuffing. Keyword stuffing simply means cramming in all the keywords you can in your content and repeating the same words and phrases needlessly. Quite obviously, keyword stuffing isn’t the way to go. It not only makes your content look and sound ugly but also puts you in danger of being penalized by search engines.

The key to finding the balance when using keywords is to spend time in keyword analysis to find out which words and phrases you should be using. Though some advise content writers to use highly specific keywords to target their niche market and to eliminate the trouble of having to compete for in-demand keywords I believe that you should use a mixture of both keywords. It simply doesn’t make sense to turn a blind eye on popular search terms. In the end the balance is found when you use relevant keywords in moderate amounts. In the end, though you might need keywords, your content should always be understandable, informative, and well-written. It should be written for your readers and not just the search engines. If you do that and yet remember to insert some keywords here and there, then you will find that your keywords will start working in your favor.

SEO: How to research keywords for better Search Engine Optimisation

Apr 52007

published by Gary in Keyword Research with No comments

If your online business depends on search engine optimisation and relevant traffic from search engines then it is highly important that you optimise your website for the right keywords. The fundamental problem with the majority of web masters is that they quickly assume what keywords people would use to find them. This is a big mistake.

Do you know companies that are very serious about their SEO efforts spend thousands of pounds just trying to find out what keywords and key phrases can fetch them maximum business from the search engines? It’s very critical that relevant keywords are used when writing your web copy and the headings so that not only you focus better, but your visitors too have a rewarding experience at your website.

Finding the right keywords can be very easy, and very difficult: it depends on the nature of your business and the kind of competition you have. Listed below are a few methods you can apply for finding the most accurate keywords for your web pages and enhance your search engine optimisation.

Use the good old search engines to research keywords

Search for the keyword, let’s say on Google, and observe how many results are being returned. By studying the websites that come at the top of the results you can make out whether they appeared for the right keyword or not. If they offer the same service that you do, then you are using the right keyword and you too should optimize your website for that keyword. If they don’t offer the same service, then you should search for the alternative keyword. Keep doing this until the desired websites begin appearing. Then start jotting down all the keywords and phrases that bring up the right websites. They are your keywords.

Use the online thesaurus to research keywords

Yes, a thesaurus is a good source of alternative keywords. Make a list of synonyms you can find and then try them on various search engines. See what sort of results are returned. If right websites appear for your synonyms then you know that your competitor are using those synonyms to optimise their websites.

Use free and commercial keyword research tools

Some of the free keyword research tools are:

Professional Search Engine Optimisation companies such as Doublespark-SEO also utilise paid for keyword research tools such as KeywordDiscovery. Athough these can cost many thousands of pounds per year, they do provide the ultimate in detailed professional keyword research analysis.

Study your log files

Your log files/traffic stats tell you what sort of visitors you attract from various search engines. You log files will also tell you what keywords bring visitors to your website. A careful study can help you decide what keywords to discard and for what keywords to optimise.
